Most of us know that TED has moved on from Long Beach this year. It’s been unofficially filtered throughout the community that along with TED, BIL 2014 is indeed happening in Vancouver, in the spirit of how BIL was started. It is now time to make it official. We’re going to be in Canada, so if you want to join us, make sure you renew those passports, grab your fellow BILders, and join us. BIL will take place a couple of weeks after BIL:SanFrancisco, so if you want to do both, you’ll be able.
We’re very excited about growing the BIL community in a new area, and this should really help expand what BIL is all about. BIL has been a transformative event for a lot of people in the community.
The desire for Vancouver is about seeing what is possible. We’re not quite starting from square one with this move, but we don’t yet have the same amazing community that was established in California. We aren’t sure what to expect, much like our experience with BIL 2008 in Monterrey. It could be an intimate event, or we could be over capacity. We just don’t know yet.
We would love to see you there if you can make it, March 22-23 (Saturday-Sunday). We will also have a pre-BIL gathering on Friday night like we do every year, but the location has yet to be determined. We’ll get to how you can help us with that in a bit.
One important factor about this year’s event is that we are going back to a free event, and will rely heavily on the donation of those who support the idea of BIL to help. All we are asking is that you give what you think it’s worth so we can continue to grow BIL in other areas.
We cannot publicly name our venue right now, as we don’t have the paperwork officially signed, and we don’t want to jinx it. However, we have been in negotiations with a space. What we can tell you is that we will be within earshot of TED in downtown (less than a quarter mile). It’s a cool space, and we’re looking forward to some of the opportunities it will provide for us to experiment a bit.
What we need from BILders
We have a venue in the works, but what we don’t have is a strong network of friends in the Vancouver and Seattle areas. We could seriously use some help getting in touch with people who are doing cool things, and know how to get things done. We need access to your network of passionate friends who embody the spirit of BIL that can help us set an example of what it means to be a BILder.
